Thinking Outside The Collective
Inspiration is everywhere. You can find it in television, literature, or by simply looking at the world around you. When it comes to creating original works of fiction or developing new ideas in general, you don’t want to take too much away from something else that has already been established, otherwise, you are just copying it. This isn’t news; It is common sense. “Thinking outside the box,” is what every great thinker strives to accomplish.
According to science and a controversial but well-known theory regarding quantum physics, there are no original ideas; Any new concept that you can come up with at any given time has already been thought of by someone else. This applies to stories, artwork, inventions, etc. So when you’re brainstorming, you are simply pulling ideas from the collective consciousness, the same way a computer might connect to a server that holds sought-after information.
With that being said, what you want to do is think outside of the collective consciousness, where all of these “new” ideas are stored. If you do the research, science will have you believe that it can’t be done. In theory, they're almost correct.
By focusing more on your own thoughts and ideas, rather than cross-checking them with the works of others and various theories that have already been established, it is quite possible to develop the new concepts that make up the collective consciousness.
You do this by realizing that the reason you feel as though your ideas are wrong or sometimes even unacceptable is that you are referencing too many outside influences when attempting to develop any new ideas. You would like to create B, something different from A, but you have subconsciously solidified this blueprint of the way things should be done. You second guess these new concepts you are coming up with because there isn’t enough evidence of similar concepts working for other people. You believe B is wrong or will be looked at as anything less than what it is, based on studying C, or D, and so on.
Thinking outside of the collective requires you to detach yourself from what you see is already working for other people. The next time something inspires you, think to yourself: What about this specific instance is actually inspiring to you? Also, what exactly do you plan to take away from the experience? Make sure that it isn’t core or defining details about the source of inspiration. Try to find inspiration in places that you have never thought to look before. Most of the greatest thinkers in the world are also skilled observers.
Everyone fears that their fresh ideas or unconventional way of thinking are completely outlandish or a waste of time. While it can be important to make sure you aren’t unknowingly mirroring the hard work that someone else has put into something, refrain from letting any findings affect your ability to keep coming up with new concepts. Also, the information that you find should not be viewed as evidence that you should alter your way of thinking. Especially involving something that you may be passionate about. If you find an idea has already been taken or established, use it as assurance that you can come up with concepts that can either be successful or accepted by society.
That’s a great idea! …But now, it’s mine.
